Commonweal

Commonweal is a nonprofit health and environmental research institute in Bolinas, California.  Founded in 1976, Commonweal conducts programs that contribute to human and ecosystem health. Commonweal's main focus is helping people with cancer through the Commonweal Cancer Help Program, a weeklong residential support program for people with cancer, and through the Commonweal Cancer Project, a resource and educational workshop for cancer patients and health professionals. Herb helped secure the property for Commonweal, and later went there as a cancer patient.

San Francisco
Zen Center

San Francisco Zen Center was established in 1962 by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi (1904-1971) and his American students. The purpose of San Francisco Zen Center is to make accessible and embody the wisdom and compassion of the Buddha as expressed in the Soto Zen tradition established by Dogen Zenji in 13th-century Japan and conveyed to us by Suzuki Roshi and other Buddhist teachers. Today, San Francisco Zen Center is one of the largest Buddhist sanghas outside Asia. Herb knew many people at the Zen Center and spent time at Green Gulch, a farm owned by the Zen Center.

Green Gulch Farm

Green Gulch Farm Zen Center, also known as Green Dragon Temple (Soryu-ji), is a Buddhist practice center in the Japanese Soto Zen tradition offering training in Zen meditation and ordinary work. The main effort at Green Gulch is to awaken people who come here the bodhisattva spirit, the spirit of kindness and realistic helpfulness. Green Gulch Farm is located in Marin County, just north of San Francisco, in a valley that opens out onto the Pacific Ocean. Herb would often spend time at Green Gulch and created sculptures at a studio located there.

Greenport,
Long Island

Greenport is located east of Manhattan, beyond some of the world's most renowned vineyards and at the edge of Long Island's vast farmlands. This small seaside village is rich with maritime history, which has been tastefully preserved for more than three centuries. Herb and the rest of his family would spend each summer at this beach community.

Mill Valley, California

Mill Valley is a creative hideaway situated at the foot of Mt. Tamalpais. What sets Mill Valley apart is not just the spectacular physical beauty of its setting, but equally its human environment - uniquely combining tranquillity and liveliness, privacy and community involvement, urban sophistication and village charm. Mill Valley is known throughout the San Francisco Bay Area for its charm, natural beauty and cultural events. Located in Marin County, just north of San Francisco, it is a special place to its friendly residents and visitors. Herb had an apartment in Mill Valley and would spend a great deal of time in the Bay Area.

Greens Restaurant,
San Francisco

Greens is located in a reconverted warehouse at Fort Mason in San Francisco. It was opened in 1979 under the auspices of the San Francisco Zen Center, and is an entirely vegetarian restaurant. Today it is home to Herb Arnold's Bucket of Flowers sculpture: "My last show in San Francisco contained a coal scuttle filled with flowers made from faucet handles. My studio at the time was on a Zen Buddhist farm where they grew the most beautiful flowers and vegetables. It is fitting to now see this sculpture at the Zen restaurant 'Greens' in San Francisco."
